We are again with the current Form Four Candidates to sit their KCSE Exams this year. Now that we are in the third month, it means the first term is almost ending. Nevertheless, the Syllabus workload is still burdensome and requires well calculated strategies if schools are to realize commendable appraisals in the forthcoming end of year results.
Let us highlight some of the steps to take in order to realize this goal
i)Subject ability groupings: -this is the style to captivate the students and make them love the subject in order to perform well. This will enhance their commitment to show their abilities to tackle the questions with ease and get correct answers.
ii) Guided group discussions: -the subject teacher could entice students with the suitable presentation of the subject in order to captivate their minds. Then groups should be formed to make presentations of their findings and understanding of the topical issues in the subject. Then the teacher can add impetus to motivate the group members and correct minimal errors. Revision materials and course books should be used to help the learners find the right materials required for the answers to possible questions asked. Guiding questions could be of great importance. Then the best style of approach to the relevance of answering the asked questions should be encouraged in the group.
At the subject level, it is good to identify the three important categories of learners, namely: the top-class performers, the middle-class performers and the lower cohort. All should be done to uplift the members of the lower cohort by encouraging them and giving them morale. Each member from the lower cohort should be encouraged to have a guide and a motivator from the top-class performers. This definitely will help the candidates to not only uplift the school mean score, but also to make even some of the weak candidates to uplift their results and better their grades.
If these steps are taken, then, the resultant outcome should show overall improvement for the whole class of candidates and the D Grade tail will be shortened if not completely cut.
The teachers should guide the candidates to read enhancing contents, schedule well the group assignments and make appropriate evaluation through thorough revisions together with the candidates using the given marking scheme.
Group discussions generally help the students in sharing of knowledge, making strategies that work better and help students to complete the syllabus in good time in order to get time for intensive revision before exams.
The obvious challenge to the teachers is definitely whether they are able to cover the syllabus in time, whether they check the learners work on daily basis and whether they find any improvement on each learner. Let us all agree and anonymously commit ourselves per se, to make the year 2025 a year of hope to all our candidates. Hope, for sure, does not disappoint.
