September 2026
September is one of the most significant months in the school calendar. It is the season when candidates begin to see the national examinations drawing near.
Revision intensifies, teachers race against time to complete the syllabus, and parents become increasingly anxious about their children’s performance.
While academic preparation is important, there is another preparation that is often overlooked the preparation of the mind and the heart.
As a teacher and counsellor, I have learnt that many learners do not fail because they lack ability. Some are overwhelmed by fear, self-doubt, peer pressure and unrealistic expectations. Anxiety can make even the brightest student forget what they know.
Therefore, this is the time to encourage learners to believe in themselves, remain calm and focus on giving their best rather than comparing themselves with others.
To our candidates, remember that success is not achieved in the final weeks before an examination. It is the result of consistent effort over many years.
Avoid the temptation to look for shortcuts or engage in examination malpractice. Integrity is more valuable than any grade. Proverbs 10:9 reminds us, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.” Let honesty, discipline and hard work define your journey.
Teachers also carry a great responsibility during this period. Besides teaching and revision, learners need reassurance. A word of encouragement, a smile, or a reminder that they are capable can reduce anxiety and restore confidence. Let us continue to create classrooms where questions are welcomed, mistakes become learning opportunities and every learner feels valued.
Parents should remember that this is the season when children need emotional support more than pressure.
Constant reminders about grades, comparisons with other children or threats of punishment may increase stress instead of improving performance. Instead, provide a peaceful home environment, encourage healthy eating and adequate sleep, and remind your children that they are loved regardless of the outcome. Confidence grows where love and acceptance are present.
As the Church, we have a responsibility to pray for our schools. Let us pray for wisdom for teachers, strength for parents and peace of mind for learners. Let us also pray for honesty during the examination period and for God’s protection over all candidates.
September reminds us that education is not only about passing examinations. It is about nurturing responsible, resilient and God-fearing young people who will serve society with integrity.
As we approach the examination season, may we prepare not only our books but also our hearts. When knowledge is combined with faith, discipline and good character, success becomes meaningful and lasting.
May God bless every learner, every teacher and every parent as we journey together towards the end of the academic year.
